What is AstaReal?

AstaReal® - a brand of natural astaxanthin ingredients which has gained global recognition.

AstaReal® astaxanthin comes from a type of algae called Haematococcus pluvialis, and it is manufactured under strict Quality Control standards. In addition to being used as a safe, high-quality astaxanthin ingredient in food and cosmetic products produced by domestic and overseas manufacturers, it is also used in the astaxanthin products that we sell.

The Manufacture of Natural Astaxanthin

Astaxanthin is produced by Haematococcus pluvialis

Haematococcus pluvialis is a type of freshwater, single-celled, green algae, found in natural habitats across the world.
In favorable habitats, Haematococcus pluvialis grows as motile cells (its green state). Conversely, in unfavorable environments, such as those lacking in nutrients or suffering from drought or strong UV exposure, it loses its motility, thickens its cell walls, forms spores and becomes dormant. This is when it produces astaxanthin and turns red (its red state).
The astaxanthin allows it to survive for long periods of time, even under severe conditions.

The History of AstaReal® Astaxanthin

In 1994, the AstaReal Group succeeded in culturing Haematococcus pluvialis on a large-scale by taking advantage of its experience in algae production and advanced technical abilities to develop a unique cultivation method that enables the algae to accumulate a high-density of astaxanthin.

Production of AstaReal® natural astaxanthin began in Gustavsberg, Sweden, where our indoor facility cultures Haematococcus pluvialis using stainless steel photobioreactors and with considerable care paid to sanitary supervision (ISO 9001 and HACCP certified).

We then extract the astaxanthin in Japan with a strict safety control system through a process that includes crushing the cell walls of the Haematococcus pluvialis (Raw Ingredient GMP certified by JIHFS), and then we deliver the AstaReal® natural astaxanthin to you.

From 2014, we also began providing products from our plant in North America – located in Moses Lake, Washington – in order to respond to the ever-increasing demand for natural astaxanthin.
AstaReal is also actively considerate of the environment. Our plant in Sweden runs on natural energy, and the one in North America runs on hydro-electric power.
